The IFT-Perimeter-SAIFR Journeys into Theoretical Physics is an international school organized jointly by the ICTP-SAIFR/IFT-UNESP in São Paulo, Brazil with the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Canada and the CUNY/Princeton Center for the Physics of Biological Function in Princeton, USA. It is a natural evolution of the Jornadas da Fisica Teorica school organized at the IFT for the past thirty years.
During the Journeys, five theoretical physics topics will be covered with two lecturers from IFT, two lecturers from Perimeter and one lecturer from the CUNY/Princeton Center. Starting from the basics, the lecturers will also aim at presenting exciting contemporary research developments in each of the topics.
The school has five days of lectures from Saturday to Wednesday followed by written exams on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.
Each of these exams will have five guided questions. The Thursday exam will be on undergraduate material and the Friday exam about the topics of the school. The goal of the exams is twofold:
Firstly, there is the pedagogical component. Solving two long exams with guided questions is a great way to learn.
Secondly, based on the results of the exams a few students will be given the chance to be part of an international joint master’s program between the IFT-SAIFR in São Paulo and either the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Canada – see here – or the CUNY/Princeton Center for the Physics of Biological Function – see here – or the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy – more information soon.
Undergraduate material covered in the second Journeys exam (and some bibliography):
– Classical Mechanics (Goldstein, Landau,…)
– Quantum Mechanics (Griffiths, Cohen-Tannoudji, Merzbacher, Sakurai,…)
– Statistical Mechanics/Thermodynamics (Fermi, Hill, Reif,…)
– Electromagnetism (Purcells, Griffiths, Landau, Jackson,…)
– Special Relativity (d’Inverno,…)
All material, lecture videos and exams of previous editions will be posted on this website.
